TopstepX Trade Copier

Copy trades into and out of your Topstep accounts through the ProjectX API, from the Heron Copier cloud.

Heron Copier connects to TopstepX directly through the ProjectX API. A TopstepX account can be a master, with its trades copied to other Topstep accounts, Rithmic, Tradovate or CFD accounts, or a slave that follows any of them.

Before you start, check which of your accounts the API can reach. Only simulated accounts can be traded through it, so the sections below cover what you need, which accounts qualify, and how sizes are copied.

What you need to connect TopstepX

TopstepX accounts are reached through the ProjectX API, which Topstep sells as a separate subscription. You need two things from TopstepX:

  • The ProjectX API subscription, purchased inside TopstepX.
  • An API key, created in TopstepX under Settings → API.

Add the account in the dashboard

In the dashboard, add a TopstepX cloud account. Enter your TopstepX username or the email address of your account, paste the API key and click Load accounts. Pick the account from the list, choose master or slave, and launch it.

To disconnect Heron Copier, revoke the API key in TopstepX.

Which Topstep accounts can be copied

The ProjectX API only trades simulated accounts. That covers Trading Combine accounts and Express Funded accounts. Live funded accounts and follower accounts cannot be traded through the API, so they cannot be used as a master or a slave.

Topstep has its own rules on copy trading and automated trading. Read them before you copy into several accounts, because breaking them can cost you the account.

Copy one Combine to several accounts

With TopstepX to TopstepX, you trade one account and the others follow. Each slave has its own volume sizing, so a 50K and a 150K Combine can follow the same master at different sizes.

Per-symbol lot caps keep each slave within its plan's contract limit. Balance or equity thresholds stop copying before a drawdown limit is reached, and Position Resync closes copied positions that are no longer open on the master after a reconnect.

If a slave should only take trades that are protected, turn on Block Trade Without SL, and new trades the master opens without a stop loss are skipped on that slave. Symbol blacklists keep a slave out of markets you do not want it to trade, such as a product your plan does not allow.

Copy between TopstepX and other futures platforms

If you also hold accounts at other futures prop firms, TopstepX can sit on either side. Rithmic to TopstepX is tested in production, and so are TopstepX masters feeding Rithmic and Tradovate slaves, as in TopstepX to Rithmic and TopstepX to Tradovate. Tradovate to TopstepX works the same way.

Same contract on both sides needs no mapping. To move a slave down to micros, use an alias with a multiplier, such as ES=MES|10, which turns one ES into ten MES and matches dated contracts like ESZ6.

Copy CFD trades into a Combine

A TopstepX slave can follow a forex or CFD master on MetaTrader, cTrader or the other supported platforms. Map each CFD to a futures product with an alias such as NAS100=MNQ, as in MT5 to TopstepX. A TopstepX master can feed a CFD account too, for example TopstepX to MT5.

TopstepX slaves trade whole contracts. Sizes are rounded to the nearest contract, the Fixed Risk methods round down, and a trade that works out to less than half a contract is skipped. CFD and futures contract sizes differ a lot, so check the copied size on a Combine before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the ProjectX API subscription?

Yes. Heron Copier reaches TopstepX accounts through the ProjectX API, which needs that subscription. Buy the subscription in TopstepX, then create an API key under Settings → API.

Can I copy trades to my live funded Topstep account?

No. The API only trades simulated accounts, which means Trading Combine and Express Funded accounts. Live funded accounts and follower accounts cannot be traded through it.

Can a TopstepX account be the master?

Yes. A Combine or Express Funded account can be a master and copy to other TopstepX accounts, Rithmic, Tradovate or CFD accounts such as MT5.

How do I stop Heron Copier from accessing my TopstepX account?

Stop the copier in the dashboard, or revoke the API key in TopstepX under Settings → API. Revoking the key disconnects Heron Copier from the account.

Can I try TopstepX copying for free?

Yes. The 7-day trial includes 2 cloud accounts. During the trial a TopstepX slave copies every trade at a fixed 1 contract; a paid license, from $19 a month, unlocks the other sizing methods.
